Spring walk series: Bristol in the early 19th Century

Walk in Time - Spring walk series

Are you interested in discovering more about how Bristol began and evolved up to the present day? Join us to find out about key events and places in Bristol's history in a series walks, each lasting two hours starting from M Shed and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.

Walks are led by Elvyn Griffiths, who has been creating and leading walks in Bristol for the past 18 years and also has 30 years experience in formal education. He says: 'Bristol is a fascinating city - I love discovering where we have come from, how the city developed and what was the spur for development. I like to focus on people, places and events, together with how they have influenced each other and interact.'

This walk forms a series of four walks, we regret that we are unable to take bookings for individual walks.

Walk 1: How Bristol Began
Friday 24 February 2012 10.15 am -12.15 pm
The walk looks at the beginnings of the original settlement, and the reasons for settling. Highlights include the Saxons attention to trade and transport, defence, law, links with other regions, buildings, crafts and agriculture. Departing from and returning to M Shed.

Walk 2: Bristol's Involvement with Slavery
Friday 2 March 2012 10.15 am -12.15 pm
The walk examines the growth of slavery as an industry, and how Bristol developed, managed, and organised slavery from the Saxons up to the legal abolition in 1833. Departing from and returning to M Shed.

Walk 3: Literary Heritage of Bristol
Friday 9 March 2012 10.15 am -12.15pm
The walk covers those writers who came from Bristol and those who came here to write. As well as the writers, the walk also covers the work of the publisher, the printer and the unsung hero…the bookseller. Departing from and returning to M Shed.

Walk 4: Bristol in the early 19th Century
Friday 16 March 2012 10.15 am -12.15 pm
With Bristol coming out of the recession of the 1790s, innovations such as the introduction of McAdam's new road surface were beginning to transform the expanding city. This walk starts from Bristol Museum & Art Gallery (top of Park Street) and finishes in Corn St. at 12.15pm. ( NB: includes some steep steps at Brandon Hill)
