Our Bristol - Points of View
Everyone sees the place they live differently to those
from outside.
The contemporary displays on the walls around the Bristol Places
gallery in M Shed represent the work of ten community groups that
came together to express what it was like to live in their local
area. People were asked to take photographs and collect objects
that would provide an insight into the everyday, the curious and
hidden characters of the places where they live. These personal
views have been shown alongside historic images and objects to
reveal how these neighbourhoods have been shaped by their
inhabitants, the landscape and the past.
The ten areas of Bristol shown here are just the beginning and as M
Shed evolves so will these displays. We would love to show as many
local areas as possible but to do them all justice we only have
space for ten at any one time. However this is a flexible space
that will highlight the characteristics of many of the other
neighbourhoods over time. We are keen to work towards achieving
this with as many communities as possible.

Martin Parr : Bristol and West
Inspired by the work of Martin Parr
Which pictures best represented Bristol?
In November 2011, M Shed launched its first temporary
exhibition, containing 59 photographs taken by Martin
Parr in Bristol and surrounding areas. The questions were put
to our visitors: "Which one's your favourite - which one represents
Bristol best and why?" These pictures would then be purchased and
added to the Public Collection of the Museum Service.
The Online Vote & Community Choices
Visitors who came in to see the images could chose their
favourite images at a voting kiosk in the exhibition, or could vote
online from the comforts of their home. Alongside the virtual
voters, M Shed got in contact with groups across the city to see
and have their say on which pictures they thought best represented
Bristol. 11 of the pictures were clear favourites, and these have
now been added to the museum's collections.
Thank you!
We would like to thank all of you who took part and gave
so much of your time to help us choose the images on behalf of
Bristol.
What happens next?
We are hoping that some of the participants in the
projects would like to help us look at various ways to display
the images once they have arrived at the museum.
